Solid wood

Acacia, mango, haldina and sheesham. No veneer, no particle board.

Shaped by hand

Cut, finished, and on the carved pieces patterned by hand.

No two alike

Every board carries its own grain. Yours will not match the photograph.

Hand wash only

Wash, dry standing on edge, keep it out of the dishwasher.

Wood, and the people who shape it

Our craft

Wood, and the people who shape it

Every board starts as a plank and ends on someone's kitchen counter. In between it is cut, shaped and finished by hand. Because no two pieces of wood are the same, the grain on the one you receive will not match the photograph exactly, and we have stopped treating that as a flaw to correct.

Why we work mostly in acacia

The wood

Why we work mostly in acacia

A cutting board asks two things of a wood that pull against each other: hard enough to survive daily knife work, soft enough to leave an edge alone. Acacia sits in the narrow band where both are true. The checkered board is different. Haldina and sheesham are cut into blocks and stood on end, so the knife meets the fibres tip-first and parts them rather than cutting across.

  • HardnessDense enough for daily knife work, soft enough to spare the edge
  • GrainNo two boards share a pattern
  • RepairA wooden board can be sanded back rather than replaced

In the making

How a board is made

Each piece is worked by hand, which is why the carved boxes take longest and why no two finish quite alike.

1Choosing the wood

Choosing the wood

Grain direction and colour decide which board a plank becomes.

2Cutting

Cutting

Cut to size, then the corners and edges are worked back by hand.

3Smoothing

Smoothing

Sanded until the surface is even and the edges are comfortable to hold.

4Finishing

Finishing

Finished, checked, and packed. The carved roti boxes take longest of all.

No two alike

The grain decides. We only follow it.

Gifting

A gift that is still in use in March

Most gifts get shelved. A board does not. It goes on the counter and stays there. Solid wood, worked by hand, and unlike anything else on the table.
